Mayor & City Council

The City of De Kalb operates under a Type A General Law structure, governed by a Mayor and five City Council members elected “at-large” by the citizens. The Council is the legislative and policy-making body of the city, responsible for adopting the budget, setting tax rates, and enacting local ordinances.

Council Meetings

Regular City Council meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 PM inside the Council Chambers at City Hall. All meetings are open to the public.

Municipal Elections

Council members serve staggered two-year terms. General municipal elections are held annually on the uniform election date in May.

Because De Kalb is an “at-large” municipality, there are no specific geographic wards. All five council members represent the entire city.
